March - July 2018

In mid-March 2018, a group of 100 journalists from around Mexico gathered in Mexico City to design and launch Verificado 2018 — a collaborative election reporting initiative that seeks to debunk viral misinformation, fact check politicians’ claims, and help Mexican audiences sort fact from fiction online ahead of crucial national elections.

Our most successful and ambitious project to date, Verificado 2018 launched with local leads Animal Politico and AJ+ Espanol and just a handful of newsrooms. Over the course of several months Verificado grew from an idea to a coalition of 90 newsrooms, universities, and civil society organizations.

Gaining hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter and Facebook, Verificado quickly became an example to all Mexicans of the potential for a collaborative coalition to combat disinformation, fact check politicians’ claims, create visual anti-disinformation content, and broadly to dampen the impact and reach of disinformation and misleading information during the Mexican elections.

Winner of the Online Journalism Award for Excellence in Collaboration and Partnerships.

Everyone is celebrating the end of the elections. I’m sad about it for one reason: VerificadoMX is also coming to an end. Who is going to dedicate themselves to creating antibodies against the fake news virus now?
